Diatoms are cool members of the algae family who date to the Jurassic Period (200 million years ago) and build their ornate microscopic shells out of soft silica.
As the diatoms die off over thousands and millions of years, their empty glass houses stack up and create sediment.
Time eventually compresses this into a soft, crumbly sedimentary rock, commonly referred to as diatomaceous earth.
