The test provides only preliminary test results. A more specific alternative chemical method must be used in order to obtain confirmatory analytical result. GC/MS is the preferred confirmatory method. Clinical consideration and professional judgment should be exercised with any drug of abuse test result, particularly when the preliminary result is positive.

This test is a qualitative screening assay that detects drug metabolites found in urine after drug usage. The test does not directly detect drugs, and it is not designed to determine the quantitative concentration of drug metabolites in urine or the levels of intoxication. It is possible that technical or procedural errors, as well as other interfering substances in the urine specimen may cause erroneous results. Amount of drug metabolites in an individual, frequency of use, diet, rate of metabolism and presence of other medications can all contribute to possible false positive/negative results. A negative result may not necessarily indicate drug-free urine. Negative results can be obtained when drug is present but below the cut-off level of the test.
