Proceeding World War II, Berlin was divided into two sectors, one being occupied by America, Britain, and France, and the other by Russia.
In June of 1948, the Soviets blocked all land and water routes through East Germany to West Berlin, which lay 110 miles inside the Soviet occupation zone.
The allies responded by setting up a series of airlifts to deliver food and supplies.
The Soviets ended the blockade in May, 1949.
