Tarajulie Estate Tea is a second flush Assam tea from the Thakurbari/Tezpur district of North East India, 1500 feet above sea level. The leaves produce a thick, full bodied tea with good malty flavour, which is good all day. Tarajulie is a beautiful estate that lies in the shadows of the Himalayan mountains on the Bramaputra River plain. On a clear day, the majestic mountains are visible on the northern horizon. The estate was purchased by the George Williamson Group of companies in the mid 1980’s, and they have maintained the high standards that this estate was known for. The estate produces only orthodox manufactured tea. From time to time, those on the estate contend with wild elephants or the occasional tiger. Not long ago, intrusions by wild animals were not welcomed. Today however, these "visits" are not seen in the same light. In fact, Tarajulie has maintained some of the forested areas on the estate to provide cover for these endangered animals. Assam boasts special characteristics because the valley is dominated by the Brahmaputra River – a large, slowly meandering river that often sees flooding during the spring and fall. This flooding has deposited a rich loam over the valley, resulting in soil that is deep and sandy. The region also suffers a very hot and steamy monsoon season, but equally important, a relatively dry and cool winter – perfect conditions for the Assam tea bush! This area is also susceptible to earthquakes which can make the ground swallow up whole tea bushes – but this does not affect the unmistakable rich taste of Tarajulie FBOP. FBOP refers to Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe, meaning the tea is made from the end bud and first leaf of each shoot. The term "broken" refers to a smaller leaf size, which results in a faster infusion time. For the best brew, Tarajulie Estate Tea should steep in water that has been brought to a rolling boil for 2-5 minutes. 98% or more of this tea comes from estates that are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership.
