This fall favorite sets the decorating tone for autumn. Chrysanthemums, lovingly known as mums for short, provide memorable late-season splashes of color for all your fall decorating, which you won’t soon forget. Yellow and orange-red in tone with a bronze-y cast, these daisy mum flowers are like pure autumn. Spotlight the container on the steps or path to your front door or on the patio. The flower show doesn’t really get started until after you receive your plant, which is by design and means a longer flowering period for you. Once blooming has concluded for the season you can overwinter the plant indoors, with the option of planting it in the ground in spring (or right away in early fall in temperate areas). The long-lasting flowers are excellent for cut flower arrangements. Change the water, clean the vase, and recut flower stems every couple of days for longer lasting flowers. Mix and match with mums of different colors and sizes. Mums look delightful with those other hallmarks of fall — pumpkins as well as ornamental gourds. Thrives best in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep soil moist, watering freely in dry weather. You can fertilize every other week during the growing season.
